Holi, the festival of colors, is incomplete without delicious sweets and snacks. As we welcome Holi 2025, it's time to indulge in traditional treats that bring joy to every celebration. From crispy gujiyas to refreshing thandai, these festive delights add flavor to your Holi party.
1.Gujiya - the King of Holi Sweet
No Holi is complete without gujiya! These crispy, deep-fried dumplings are filled with a delightful mixture of khoya (mawa), dry fruits, and sugar. Whether you choose the traditional mawa gujiya or experiment with chocolate gujiya, this sweet treat is a must-have.
Texture and taste wise the fried gujiya are definitely much better. However for health reasons and to cut down on the fat you can easily bake them when making this gujiya
2.Malpua - The Indian Pancake Delight
Malpua are traditional North Indian pancakes made with wheat flour, jaggery or sugar and cardamom powder. Various ingredients like semolina, fennel seeds, milk, khoya, coconut, yogurt and even fruits like banana are sometimes added to the malpua batter. Malpua is a festive delight & are traditionally made in many Indian homes during festivals like Holi, Navratri and Diwali. In India, you are most likely to find a zillion versions of this celebration treat right from the households to the halwai shops (sweet shops), one different from the other depending on the region.
Malpua is a delicious Indian pancake-like dessert soaked in sugar syrup. These crispy yet soft treats, flavored with cardamom and saffron, are best enjoyed with rabri (thickened sweet milk).
3.Thandai-Infused Shakarpara - A Crunchy Twist
Thandai is a refreshing & cooling Indian beverage mostly made during festivals like HOLI & Maha Shivratri. It is a traditional drink & is much popular in the Northern States of India. This delicious & aromatic coolant is made with nuts, seeds, whole spices and milk. Homemade Thandai is flavorful & delicious than the one made with store bought thandai masala or syrup. Most of these bottled/packed stuff also have additives or preservatives.
Holi celebrations are incomplete without a chilled glass of thandai. Made with milk, nuts, saffron, and spices, this refreshing drink keeps you cool during the festivities. For an extra twist, you can also make thandai-flavored sweets like thandai barfi or thandai ice cream
4.Dahi Bhalla - A Soothing Festive Treat
Dahi Bhalla is what we call them in eastern Uttar Pradesh, in Delhi they are usually called Dahi Bhalla.
Well, whatever you call them the bottom line is they are delicious and a must have for festivals.
So what are dahi bhalle? These are deep fried fritters made with lentils.
They are served with topping of yogurt and chutneys and that’s what makes them so delectable.
If you’re looking for Holi special snacks, dahi bhalla (or dahi vada) is a top choice. These soft lentil dumplings, soaked in curd (yogurt) and topped with tangy chutneys, make for a delicious, light snack during Holi gatherings.
5.Besan Sev - The Spicy Munchie
I’ve got one of those quintessential holi snacky treats for you in this post of mine. Call it Besan Sev or Karasev or just Sev, these medium-thick, crispy and tasty spiced strands are just a thing of awesomeness. Gram flour (besan), some spices and seasonings are turned into a dough and fried to a golden perfection. This Sev recipe is also quick and isn’t any rocket science to get done with. I’d say, save this Sev Recipe for a yummylicious homemade snack.
6.Puran Poli - The Maharashtrian Delight
This Maharashtrian delicacy is a must-try during Holi. Puran poli is a soft, stuffed flatbread filled with a sweet mixture of chana dal, jaggery, and cardamom. It’s best enjoyed with ghee or milk.
7. Namak Pare – Crispy & Addictive Snack
Namak Para is crispy fried savory Indian snack made with flour, spices and ghee These are best enjoyed with a cup of chai. My mom would often make a batch of these crunchy namak para during festivals like Holi & Diwali. But if you ask me. you don’t need an occasion to munch on them. They are highly addictive! They are traditionally deep fried but you can also air fry or bake them for a healthier option.
Holi parties are filled with laughter, games, and enjoying,quick bites. Namak pare (savory fried crackers) are crunchy, spiced, and perfect for munching with tea or thandai. try shakarpare, which is coated with sugar syrup.
8.Bhang Pakoras – A Traditional Holi Twist
For those who like a traditional Holi experience, bhang pakoras are a classic treat. These crispy fritters, made with besan (gram flour), spinach, and infused bhang, add a fun touch to Holi celebrations.
Bhang Pakoras originated from Indian cuisine. They feature tender Bhang leaves and a blend of spices for a burst of flavour. These fritters are a popular snack with their crispy exterior and soft, flavourful interior. This dish can also be enjoyed as an appetizer, making a lasting impression on the diners with its unique taste and aromatic profile.
